Measured Space
April 2021 - July 2021
Working with my colleague, Tony Veronese, we collaborated on a sculpture proposal titled, Measured Space, for the Community Togetherness Project (CTP) Competition. The prompt for the competition was to create a sculpture or mural that responded to regional COVID-19 experiences. The work created was meant to engage the community with uplifting and healing creativity that confronted feelings of loss during the pandemic. As the winners of this competition, we were awarded a $2,000 Wells Fargo grant to create this sculpture piece for the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. The piece was then installed at the John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden at MMFA. On June 29th, the sculpture moved to Riverwalk Stadium in downtown Montgomery where it was displayed until the end of July.
Artist Statement
A table, in essence, is a place of communion. It is a place to share meals, converse, and discuss. We believe a table is a symbol of togetherness. By creating a table, it invites the viewer to actively participate in the sculpture through sitting. The table we create specifically separates two people to reference the six feet of social distance we have all had to put in place at the stores we shop at, in schools, and our ability to gather safely. It also leaves room for the viewer to contemplate and reflect on their own experiences they have had through this challenging time. It invites us to hold dear once again, the notion of dialogue, understanding, and learning from one another. A table and chairs are just objects, flat and firm, yet their potential to alter the course of our narratives is well documented within ourselves.
