Crossing Paths
Dec 2021 - Jan 2022
Marguerite Gilbertson & Krista Brand
This collaborative installation journeys to places that are familiar yet carry a sense of isolation or loneliness. It is about traversing through; and through the act of noticing, finding a sense of kinship with a place. It is also about “home” as both idea and place - the homes we inhabit, the homes we miss, the homes that are people, the home of the planet, home disconnected, home as a commodity, home on the land of past and current conflict. There is also a combining of landscapes between two people across thousands of miles; the overlap of these experiences shifts into another experience altogether. This translates in both digital and physical processes - in a way, mimicking both the digital and analog tools the artists have used to communicate about this project - video calls, text messages, and email, as well as snail-mail.
Krista and Marguerite attended graduate school together at Washington State University. Over the course of the past year, they have been meeting virtually to talk about work, life, and the ongoing challenges of being artists. From these conversations, this project has evolved to express the desire to connect and share despite distance and managing day-to-day life.
Krista Brand is an artist and curator. Her artwork explores everyday encounters with litter and plastic waste by reframing cross-sections of urban landscapes. Krista has earned multiple fellowships and awards and has self-published several artist books. She is a co-founder of Side x Side Contemporary, an international online exhibition space. Krista works as an academic coordinator and instructor of art at Washington State University.
